Maintaining WPC Cladding and Decking Outdoors

The maintenance programme is mostly an absence of one

Timber outdoors needs sanding, oiling and board replacement. WPC boards are moisture proof, water resistant, UV resistant and termite resistant through the board rather than through a coating, so the routine is cleaning, not refinishing. That is the point of the material, and it is what the building owner is buying.

Routine cleaning

Rinse with water and brush with a soft brush. Do not use aggressive abrasives on an embossed surface; the grain that makes the board look like timber is a texture, and scouring flattens it in patches that then catch the light differently.

Colour settling in the first months

Any exterior surface settles slightly in its first months of exposure and then holds. Co-extrusion is what gives these boards their fade resistance. Expect a small initial shift and judge the colour after it rather than in week one.

Drainage is the real maintenance item

The two mistakes that shorten the life of an installation are both about water: a blocked drainage cavity behind cladding, and debris packed into the gaps of a deck so water sits on the board. Keep the cavity clear and sweep the deck gaps out.

Expansion gaps and fixings

Check that expansion gaps at board ends have not been closed up by later work, and that clips are still seated. A board that cannot move pushes against its neighbour, and the symptom appears as a lifted or bowed board that looks like a material fault.

Decking underfoot

WPC decking is a 140x25mm hollow chambered board over a levelled joist grid. Keep the substructure ventilated so water drains away, and clean with water and a soft brush. No oiling, no sanding, no sealing.
