The Processing Stages Inside an Organic Waste Composting Machine

Waste Segregation

Segregation happens before composting proper and is one of the initial preparatory activities. It eases the composting work and lets the waste be managed through all processing stages. Biodegradable waste is usually segregated into wet and dry waste, because dry waste does not degrade as fast and its treatment differs.

Shredding

Shredding is an early stage in processing. A shredder, also called a crusher, is an accessory of an organic waste composting machine. It reduces particle size to roughly 8 mm to 10 mm, which increases surface area and accelerates decomposition. It handles vegetable waste, fruit and fruit skins, leaves and tree branches, and cooked or uncooked meat.

Dewatering

After shredding, the material is dewatered to dry it and reduce volume significantly, by up to 80 percent. This creates odourless organic waste that then goes on to be composted. This stage is where most of the weight disappears, because food waste is largely water.

Air and Bio Filtration

Both aerobic and anaerobic processes produce a complex mixture of odorous gases. Molecular filtration deals with them. The machine carries a suitable exhaust blower with an activated carbon filter, which is why a composting machine can sit inside an occupied building without the room smelling of the process.

Why the Stages Matter Together

Each stage sets up the next. Segregation protects compost quality, shredding speeds decomposition, dewatering removes most of the mass, and filtration handles what would otherwise be the main objection to siting a machine indoors.
