Gears and Pinions
Forged gear and pinion blanks in 42CrMo4 and case hardening alloys
What Gears and Pinions Is and Who It Is For
Gear and pinion blanks are forged so that the grain flow supports the tooth root, then heat treated to the condition your gear cutting and hardening route needs. We have experience with case hardening and through hardening applications in 42CrMo4, 34CrNiMo6, 18CrNiMo7-6 and 30CrNiMo8, and also supply swing gears, rim gears, hoist gears and swing pinions for mining shovels.
Key Benefits
- Blank condition set for your own carburising or nitriding route
- Grain flow running into the tooth root rather than across it
- Mining specific grades in carbon and alloy steels for extended service life
- Machining available before gear cutting
| Gear grades | 42CrMo4, 34CrNiMo6, 18CrNiMo7-6, 30CrNiMo8 |
|---|---|
| Alloy steels | 4140, 4150, 4330, 4330V, 4340, 1045, 1080 |
| Mining | all mining specific grades in carbon and alloy steels for extended service life |
| Delivery conditions | forged, normalised, rough machined, quenched, tempered |
Who It Is For
- Gearbox and transmission manufacturers
- Mining equipment rebuilders
- Gear cutting shops buying blanks
- Rotary equipment OEMs
Problems It Solves
- Blanks that distort unevenly after carburising scrap finished gears
- Plate cut blanks crack at the tooth root under shock load
- Mining gears made in general purpose grades wear out early
Technical Features
- Case hardening and through hardening grades
- Mining specific grades in carbon and alloy steels
- Forged, normalised, rough machined, quenched or tempered delivery
- Rolled rings for large gear blanks

Quality Control
- Hardness and structure checked after heat treatment
- Blank dimensions verified against the gear drawing
- Material certificate per heat
Customization Options
- Blank geometry and machining allowance to your gear line
- Grade selection for case or through hardening
- Large blanks as rolled rings
How We Make It
Blank drawing review
Forging or ring rolling
Normalising or quench
Normalising or quench and temper
Rough machining
Inspection before gear cutting
How It Compares
Forged blanks outlast plate cut blanks in every gear application that sees shock loading, which is why mining and wind gearing is specified as forged.
Use Guide
- Tell us the hardening route and the expected distortion allowance
- Send the finished gear drawing where possible, not only the blank
- Confirm any ultrasonic testing requirement up front
