Open Die Forgings
Rings discs blocks and shafts forged in carbon alloy tool and stainless steels
What Open Die Forgings Is and Who It Is For
Open die forging is the base process behind most of what Shandong Tianhao Precise Engineering supplies: rings and open die forgings for gears, trunnions and pinions, forged rings, contoured rings, discs and blocks. Because the same order also covers heat treatment, machining and fabrication, the part leaves as a finished component rather than as a forging that still needs three more suppliers.
Key Benefits
- Forging, heat treatment, machining and fabrication handled under one order
- Grain flow follows the part shape, which a cut-from-plate blank cannot give
- Metallurgical staff develop customised alloys where a standard grade will not do
- Large components accepted, including work for the 5-axis machining centre
| Alloy steels | 4140, 4150, 4330, 4330V, 4340, 1045, 1080 |
|---|---|
| Pressure grades | ASTM A350 Grade LF2, ASTM A350 Grade LF6 |
| Stainless | 304 and 316 |
| Aluminium | 6061, 7050, 7075 |
| Machining | CNC machining centre with 5-axis machine for big components |
Who It Is For
- Industrial machinery builders replacing fabricated blanks
- Transmission makers buying gear and pinion blanks
- Tool and die shops ordering blocks and rolled rings
Problems It Solves
- Plate cut blanks have no grain flow and fail earlier under fatigue
- Coordinating forge, heat treatment and machine shops costs weeks of lead time
- Standard grades sometimes cannot meet the property requirement
Technical Features
- Carbon and low alloy steels, tool steels, medium alloy steels, aluminium, titanium, stainless steels and superalloys
- Customised alloy development with our metallurgical staff
- Heat treatment, machining, fabrication and testing as value added services
- 5-axis CNC machining capability for large parts

How It Compares
Open die forging suits one-off and medium volume parts and very large sections. Closed die forging becomes the better route once volumes justify the die cost and the shape repeats.
Use Guide
- Send the finished part drawing and say which condition you want delivered
- State the required mechanical properties, not only the grade name
- Tell us the machining you plan to do yourself so the allowance is right
