Crane Wheels
Forged and machined crane wheels for handling equipment
What Crane Wheels Is and Who It Is For
Crane wheels take a concentrated contact load on the rail and a bending load through the axle, so a forged blank with a hardened tread outlasts a cast wheel in the same duty. Tianhao forges the wheel, heat treats it and machines the tread, flanges and bore in house, and supplies forged rings, contoured rings, discs and open die forgings for the rest of the handling equipment programme.
Key Benefits
- Forged tread resists the contact fatigue that cracks cast wheels
- Bore, keyway and tread machined concentric on one order
- Sets machined to matched diameter so the crane tracks straight
- Made to drawing or copied from the worn wheel
| Scope | forged and machined crane wheel |
|---|---|
| Alloy steels | 4140, 4150, 4330, 4330V, 4340, 1045, 1080 |
| Delivery conditions | forged, normalised, rough machined, quenched, tempered |
| Machining | CNC machining centre for finished wheels |
Who It Is For
- Crane manufacturers and rebuilders
- Steel plant and port maintenance departments
- Handling equipment OEMs
Problems It Solves
- Cast wheels spall on the tread and derail the crane
- Wheels bought individually differ in diameter and make the crane skew
- Machining a wheel from plate leaves no grain flow in the flange
Technical Features
- Forged wheel blanks
- Tread hardening by heat treatment
- Machined bore, keyway and flanges
- Matched sets to the same finished diameter

Quality Control
- Finished diameter matched across the set
- Hardness measured on the tread
- Bore and keyway checked against the axle drawing
Customization Options
- Single flange, double flange or flat tread
- Bore, keyway and bearing seat to drawing

How It Compares
Forged wheels cost more than cast wheels at purchase and less per service hour, because the tread resists spalling and the wheel can be re-turned rather than replaced.
Use Guide
- Order wheels as a matched set for one crane, not one at a time
- Send the rail profile as well as the wheel drawing
- State the required tread hardness for your duty cycle
