The choice is about where the product is seen

A colour box exists to sell the product from a shelf to someone who has never heard of your brand. An OPP bag exists to protect the product until someone who already decided to buy it opens the parcel. If the SKU sells online from a photograph, most of what a colour box does is being paid for twice.

Cost is per unit and per carton

A colour box adds unit cost, but it also changes carton quantity and therefore freight per unit. Compare the two on landed cost per unit rather than on packaging price alone, or the cheaper option can arrive more expensive.

Gift sets are a third case

A set needs structural packaging that holds several items in place. That is a dieline project designed alongside the contents, not a box chosen after the products are made.

Get the packing list right

Carton quantity, gross weight and dimensions are confirmed on the packing list before production ends. That data feeds your freight booking and your customs entry, so check it when it is sent rather than when the container arrives.
