IP Ratings Define Real World Protection

IP67, IP68 and IP69 are not marketing terms. They are test standards that define how well a lamp resists dust, water and high-pressure washdown. For vehicle and machinery lighting, this means the lamp can survive daily exposure to mud, rain, snow and cleaning with hoses or pressure washers without failure.

What IP67 Means in Practice

An IP67 rating means the lamp is dust tight and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. This is sufficient for most off-road vehicles, cranes, excavators and forklifts that operate in wet or muddy conditions but do not require full submersion.

What IP68 Means in Practice

An IP68 rating means the lamp is dust tight and can withstand continuous submersion in water beyond 1 meter depth. This is required for vessels, boats, mining machinery and equipment that may be fully submerged during operation or cleaning.

What IP69K Means in Practice

IP69K is the highest level. It means the lamp is dust tight and can withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets from any direction. This is required for equipment used in food processing, chemical plants or industrial washdown areas where steam cleaning is routine.

How the Seal Is Made

The seal is created by the cable entry gland and the gasket. The gland compresses the cable and locks it in place. The gasket, made of EPDM rubber, sits between the housing and the lens or cover. Together, they form a continuous barrier that prevents water and dust from entering the internal components.

Why the Housing Material Matters

The housing material affects long-term sealing performance. 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel resist corrosion in saltwater and harsh environments. 6063 aluminum and die-cast aluminum provide good strength and heat dissipation. All housings are sealed with gaskets and glands to maintain the IP rating.

How to Verify the Rating

SUNLITEC tests all lamps in-house using a salt spray corrosion testing chamber and a high and low temperature alternating hot and humid testing chamber. These tests simulate long-term exposure to harsh conditions and confirm that the IP seal remains intact over time.

Matching the Rating to the Machine

A forklift in a warehouse may only need IP67. A boat in coastal waters needs IP68. A mining vehicle in a wet tunnel may require IP69K. Choose the rating based on the machine’s operating environment, not the lowest available option.
