Sizing Comes Before Everything Else

A scupper plug that does not seal is worse than no plug, because the deck team believes the deck is contained when it is not. Measure the internal diameter of the actual scupper, at the point where the plug will seat, on every deck position you intend to plug. Ships are rarely uniform: a vessel may need three sizes to cover the main deck.

Once the correct sizes are established, record the catalogue code against each deck position in the ship's documentation. The next chief officer should not have to remeasure the ship to place a reorder.
