Insulator service life and when to replace in batches

What each material gives you

Under normal operating conditions, porcelain insulators run 20 to 30 years. Glass insulators run 25 to 35 years, with self-exploded units replaced individually rather than triggering a batch replacement when overall performance is good. Composite insulators run 15 to 20 years, limited by sheath aging and core rod degradation rather than by the insulation itself.

The two thresholds that justify a batch decision

Batch replacement is recommended when the failure rate of insulators in a line exceeds 5 %, or when testing shows that the insulation performance of most units has dropped below the design standard. Below those thresholds, individual replacement is the cheaper and less disruptive route.

Why deterioration rate matters at purchase

The annual deterioration rate published for a disc is the percentage of units expected to become electrically defective each year. It is the number that decides whether a line reaches the 5 % threshold in year twelve or year twenty-five. Our U70 series publishes rates of 0.04, 0.01 and 0.005 %.

Planning the spares against the life

Reserving 1 to 2 % of the installed quantity per year for maintenance is the usual approach, bought in batches every two to three years. Buying spares in batches rather than continuously keeps the replacement units consistent in model and performance with what is already in the line, which matters because mixing units in a string is itself a failure mode.
