Shackle Insulator ED-1

Larger shackle: 100 mm diameter, 12 kN transverse strength, 22 kV dry flashover.

The highest wet flashover voltage in this range at 10 kV, on a 12 kN body, which is the combination the exposed shackle position actually needs.

Who this is for

Specified by

  • Low voltage networks terminating service drops at poles and buildings
  • Rural electrification schemes with long LV spans between structures
  • Contractors working on street lighting and secondary distribution
  • Utilities standardising the shackle position across a network

The problem it is built around

The shackle position takes the sharpest angles on a low voltage network, and it is usually the last part anyone checks. When it goes, the conductor drops into a street rather than into a right of way.

What you get instead

The highest wet flashover voltage in this range at 10 kV, on a 12 kN body, which is the combination the exposed shackle position actually needs.

Why ours

Published dry and wet flashover voltages and transverse strength for every size, from one plant, so a network can standardise on documented numbers instead of on whatever a trader shipped last time.

Use guide

Before it goes on the line

  1. Use the ED-1 where the angle or dead-end pull at a shackle position is significant.
  2. Check the bolt and strap for corrosion at the same time as the insulator. Galvanising failure at the fitting outlives the porcelain problem.
  3. Confirm the conductor sits in the groove without riding on the shoulder.
  4. Replace the whole assembly rather than the insulator alone when the strap shows rust-through.

Comparison

How it differs from the alternative

The ED-2 is the same shackle type at 80 mm diameter, 10 kN transverse strength and an 18 kV dry flashover voltage. The ED-1 is the unit for the loaded positions.

Answers

Shackle Insulator ED-1: buyer questions

What is the difference between the ED-1 and the ED-2?

The ED-1 is 100 mm in diameter with 12 kN transverse strength, 22 kV dry and 10 kV wet flashover. The ED-2 is 80 mm with 10 kN transverse strength, 18 kV dry and 9 kV wet flashover.

What is the net weight?

0.5 kg.

Can it be used in coastal areas?

It can, but clean it with a neutral detergent before installation and include it in the network washing programme. Send us the pollution class if you want the selection checked.

Do you supply matching straps and bolts?

Tell us the pole or wall fixing you use and we will quote the strap and bolt with the insulators.
