The Two Tapes Bond in Completely Different Ways
Plastic tape sits on the surface of the carton and holds by adhesion to the outer liner. Water activated gummed paper tape uses a starch adhesive that penetrates into the fibres of the carton and creates a total bond. That single difference explains almost everything else about how the two behave.
Tamper Evidence Is the Clearest Advantage
Because the bond is into the fibres, gummed paper tape cannot be removed from the carton without leaving traces of damage. Standard packaging tapes can be lifted and re-laid without a visible trace. If a carton has been opened in transit, gummed tape shows it and plastic tape usually does not.
It Holds on Board That Plastic Tape Struggles With
The adhesive sticks instantly to cardboard even if the board is low grade, previously used, or not entirely flat. This is the practical benefit that packers notice first, because it removes the temptation to add a few more overlapping strips just in case. Tape usage and packing time both fall as a result.
Recycling Is Simpler With One Material
Gummed paper tape is made from a natural kraft paper carrier and a starch adhesive, both from renewable natural resources. Packaging research associations have accredited gummed paper tape as recyclable, which means the sealed carton stays a single paper stream for the receiving customer rather than a mixed one.
The Cost Is a Dispenser and a Bench Habit
Water activated tape needs a dispenser that wets the adhesive, so it is not a drop-in replacement for a hand-held tape gun. Manual and bench dispensers are both available. If you are not ready to change the bench, self adhesive paper tape gives you the paper recycling benefit with a standard tape gun, though without the fibre bond and the tamper evidence.
When Plastic Tape Is Still the Right Choice
For high-humidity storage, for cartons that will be re-opened and re-sealed as part of the process, or where the bench has no space for a dispenser, plastic tape remains the practical answer. The honest position is that gummed tape wins on security and recyclability, and loses on convenience.
