How to Choose POF Shrink Film Thickness and Format
Working through gauge, width, fold type and perforation so the film matches both the pack and the machine it will run on.
Gauge Follows Pack Weight and Sharpness
POF shrink film is produced at 12 mic, 15 mic, 19 mic and 25 mic. The lighter gauges suit light retail units where the film only has to hold the pack together and present it. Heavier gauges are for bundles and heavier cases, and for products with corners or edges that would puncture a lighter film during shrinking.
Width Is Set by the Pack Perimeter Not by Its Face
Width runs from 100 mm to 2000 mm. The film has to travel round the pack, so the working number is the perimeter of the cross section plus enough for the seal, not the width of the product as it sits on the bench. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a first order does not run properly.
Center Fold or Single Wound
Center fold film is folded in half on the roll and is used on L-bar sealers, where the pack is inserted into the fold. Single wound is a flat roll used where the film is wrapped from one side. Both are available, along with ready-made POF shrink bags where the volume does not justify a sealer at all.
Perforation Where the Pack Needs to Breathe
Pre-perforated and micro-perforated versions are available. Micro-perforation lets trapped air escape during shrinking, which prevents bubbles on large flat faces, and it lets some products breathe in storage. Pre-perforation gives the end customer an opening point.
Why the Film Is Five Layer
POF is a five layer biaxial orientation co-extrusion film. The construction is what gives balanced and stable shrinkage during packaging, high clarity so the printed carton stays visible, and burn through resistance with firm sealing so the sealing bar does not stop the line.
The Cold Chain Argument
POF does not embrittle at low temperature after shrinking. This is the single most common reason packers switch away from PVC, because a film that cracks in a chilled or frozen chain turns a protective pack into loose material and a customer complaint.
