How To Read A Standby Time Figure On A GPS Tracker

A standby figure is a mode, not a promise. Change the reporting interval and the same battery gives a different answer.

Solar GPS tracker whose runtime depends on reporting mode

Standby is measured in a mode

G25 quotes 30, 50 and 100 days for its 6000, 10000 and 20000 mAh versions. Those figures belong to a defined working mode, not to a device reporting every thirty seconds around the clock.

The three modes

In normal mode the position is transmitted every 30 seconds while working, the device goes to standby after about 2 minutes of inactivity and sends a heartbeat every 5 minutes to hold the server connection, and vibration wakes it. Power saving mode is the same but disconnects from the server while asleep. Smart mode uploads on a set interval and cannot be woken by vibration.

Why the mode decides the bill as well

Every heartbeat is data. On a large asset fleet the difference between normal and smart mode shows up in the SIM bill as clearly as in the battery.

Current figures tell the real story

G25 draws 65 mA working, 8 mA on standby and 3 mA asleep at 4V. G07E averages 50 mA working and under 1 mA asleep. Those numbers let you model a duty cycle instead of trusting a single headline figure.

When solar changes the question

With G07E the panel cycles the charge automatically, so the question moves from how long the battery lasts to whether the asset sees enough light. The 120 day figure without sunshine is the safety margin, not the design case.
