How to Choose the Right IBC Adapter

Start With the Thread on Your Valve

IBCs come with coarse and fine threads and several different specifications, including S60x6 buttress, M80x3 and S100x8. Identify the thread type and size of your IBC opening before you order anything.

IBC valves with an S60x6 buttress outlet are the most commonly used type, and they connect with the broadest range of IBC adapters. Schutz valves typically feature a 2-1/8 inch BSP thread outlet. Valves with M80x3 threads are commonly found on Chinese IBC brands. Valves with S100x8 threads, often referred to as 3 inch DN80 valves, have a larger thread size than DN50 valves.

Think About What Goes on the Other Side

Consider the accessories and fittings the adapter has to serve: hoses, quick connectors or taps. Verify that the adapter is compatible with them so the whole assembly works as one, rather than needing a second adapter to bridge a gap you did not plan for.

Check Material Compatibility

Consider whether the adapter material suits the contents of the IBC. Certain chemicals may react with specific materials, leading to corrosion or contamination. Adapter bodies in this range are PP, PE and HDPE.

Do Not Overlook the Seal

Pay attention to the type of seal used in the adapter. The seal is what provides a leak-proof connection between the IBC and the external device, not the tightness of the thread. PE and NBR gaskets are the usual options.

Bring a Mixed Fleet Onto One Standard

If you run totes with different valve threads, the practical answer is to convert them rather than stock two accessory sets. An M80x3 female to S60x6 male adapter and an S100x8 to S60x6 reducer both put a non standard valve onto the common S60x6 thread.
