Hot Extrusion Special Profiles

Extruded steel sections for shapes that cannot be rolled or drawn

Product Overview

What Hot Extrusion Special Profiles Is and Who It Is For

Hot extrusion pushes heated steel through a die, which makes deep re-entrant shapes and thin webs possible that rolling cannot form. Tianhao uses it as one of the four forming routes for custom profiles, alongside hot rolling, cold drawing and cold rolling, and picks the route from the geometry on your drawing rather than from what one mill happens to own.

Key Benefits

  • Complex and undercut cross sections become a single solid section
  • Short runs are viable because extrusion tooling is simpler than a rolling stand
  • Stainless, nickel and high temperature alloys extrude where they are difficult to roll cold
  • The extruded section can be cold drawn afterwards when the tolerance demands it

Who It Is For

  • Designers with a cross section that no standard mill will roll
  • Buyers needing moderate volumes of an awkward section
  • Process equipment builders working in stainless and nickel alloys

Problems It Solves

  • Rolling cannot form deep undercuts and re-entrant grooves
  • Machining the same shape from solid bar removes most of the material
  • Fabricating the shape from plate introduces welds in the load path

Technical Features

  • Die based forming for complex cross sections
  • Suitable for carbon, alloy, stainless and nickel alloy steels
  • Can be combined with a cold drawing pass
  • Heat treatment available after extrusion

Comparison

How It Compares

Extrusion handles geometry that hot rolling cannot form, while hot rolling remains cheaper per metre for simple sections in long runs. Cold drawing after extrusion is the route when both the shape and the tolerance are demanding.

Use Guide

  • Send the section as a CAD or SolidWorks file rather than a sketch
  • Flag any undercut or thin web that must be held exactly
  • Tell us the required tolerance so we can decide whether a drawing pass is needed
FAQ

Questions Buyers Ask About Hot Extrusion Special Profiles

When is extrusion better than rolling?

When the cross section has deep grooves, undercuts or thin webs that rolls cannot form.

Can an extruded profile reach cold drawn tolerances?

Yes, by adding a cold drawing pass after extrusion.

Do you extrude stainless and nickel alloys?

Yes, stainless, nickel alloys and high temperature alloys are all within the range we work with.
