When to Choose a Shaped Tube Profile
Shaped tube removes brackets, welds and adapters. Here is how to judge whether your design qualifies.
The test is the bracket count
If your assembly welds a plate, a bracket or a machined adapter onto a round tube, a shaped section can usually absorb that part into the tube itself.
Common shapes
D section, triangle shape, oval shape steel tube and hexagonal tube are the usual starting points, and any other cross section can be made from a drawing.
Materials
Shaped tube profiles are available in stainless and carbon steel, so the same geometry can serve a washdown application and a painted structure.
Where a round tube still wins
A plain round tube is the cheapest section per metre. If nothing mounts to it and nothing has to index against it, keep it.
What to send
