Mirror polished stainless steel hollow ball on a floor in a modern interior space
Project Notes

Ball Combination Sculpture Assembly

A landscape architect was developing a public plaza installation that required a dynamic, modular sculpture. The design needed to allow for form changes during the final stages of project development.

Project Challenge

The sculpture had to be constructed from spherical elements that could be reconfigured into different shapes after fabrication began. Each ball had to maintain consistent dimensions and finish despite being assembled into a non-standard configuration.

Customer Pain Points

  • A form that has no catalogue equivalent and must be built from a model
  • A scale that cannot travel or be handled in one piece
  • A polished surface that has to stay unmarked through the whole build
  • Multiple ball types with different finishes must be integrated into a single assembly

Our Solution

The workshop used hand forging and plate forming data calculation to build each spherical element to the exact size and curvature specified. The balls were fabricated separately and then assembled on-site using a modular connection system that allowed for form adjustments.

Manufacturing

How It Was Built

  1. Model or sample built and approved
  2. Plate forming data calculated for each spherical panel
  3. Forging and welding of the body
  4. Grinding through successive grits and final finishing
  5. Trial assembly and marking of sections
  6. Protective film and crating

Supply Chain

The stainless steel hollow balls, flower balls, thorn balls, colour coated balls and stainless steel spheres were fabricated in-house using hand forging and plate forming. The components were sectioned for transport and shipped in protective crates. Assembly occurred on-site after delivery.

Quality Control

Each ball was inspected for shape and surface finish against the approved model. Weld joints were checked for dressing and alignment. The final assembly was inspected for dimensional accuracy and surface integrity before protective film was applied.

Final Result

A fully assembled sculpture composed of multiple spherical elements in a configurable form. The piece was delivered in sections and reassembled on-site according to the final design.

What the Project Owner Gained

The project team gained the ability to adjust the sculpture’s form late in the process without re-fabricating components. The final piece met the required scale and finish while allowing for logistical flexibility during installation.
