Two-piece sets: replace the wire, not the set

A two-piece set is a trunk cable to the monitor plus separate leadwires. Ronseda lists 13 products in this configuration. Leadwires fail one at a time, almost always where the wire meets the clip, and on a two-piece set the ward replaces the failed wire alone.

This is the right choice on a ward where cable sets stay with the bed and the stock room can hold individual leadwires.

One-piece sets: nothing to lose between shifts

A one-piece set moulds trunk and leadwires into a single assembly. Ronseda lists 12 products in this configuration. There are no separable parts, so the set that leaves the store arrives complete at the bedside.

This is the right choice for ambulances, transfer bags and resuscitation bays, where a set missing two leadwires is the same as no set at all.

Lead count, colour code and termination

Lead counts across the range run 3, 5, 6, 10 and 12, and the count has to match what the monitor expects. A 5-lead trunk on a 3-lead monitor does not give you extra leads.

Colour coding is either IEC or AHA. Pick the one your staff already read; a set in the other convention will be miswired eventually, and the artefact will be blamed on the cable.

Terminations are snap or clip, and that choice has to match the electrodes already in stock. Ordering cables and electrodes at the same time avoids a mismatch that only appears at the bedside.

What actually causes a noisy trace

Before replacing a cable set, check the electrode. A dried-out or edge-lifted electrode produces most of the artefact that gets blamed on cables, and it is the cheaper thing to rule out.

If the trace becomes intermittent as the cable is flexed near the connector, that is a cable fault and the part should be replaced.
