Reading a yarn count

The number is a count: the higher it is, the finer the yarn. The /2 means the yarn is two-ply, two strands twisted together. So 32s/2 is a fine two-ply yarn and 16s is a thick single. We weave with 16s, 21s, 21s/2 and 32s/2, which covers everything from a soft dense pile to a robust hard-wearing loop.

What a coarser yarn gives you

16s and 21s singles build bulk quickly, which means a given GSM is reached with fewer loops. The towel feels substantial and costs less to weave, but the surface is less refined. This is a common choice for pool towels and promotional ranges where the towel takes rough handling.

What a two-ply yarn gives you

21s/2 and 32s/2 produce a denser, smoother pile at the same weight and hold their shape better through repeated washing. Two-ply yarn resists shedding, which is what makes a towel still look new after a season. It costs more, and it is where a premium retail range earns its price.

Yarn count and GSM together

These two decide the towel between them. A 450 GSM towel in 16s and a 450 GSM towel in 32s/2 weigh the same and feel completely different. When you send a benchmark towel to match, we look at both, which is why matching a physical sample is more reliable than matching a written specification.

Choosing for your use case

For hotel linen washed daily, a two-ply yarn extends the replacement cycle. For a promotional giveaway used a few times, a single yarn puts the budget into size and decoration instead. For retail, the yarn count is what your customer feels in the shop before they read the label.
