Barrel Bolts Safety Hasps and Latches Explained
Three families of door hardware that are often specified interchangeably and should not be. What each one actually secures, and where each one fails.
A Barrel Bolt Secures From One Side
A barrel bolt holds a door shut from the side it is fitted on. It does not lock the door from the other side unless it is padlocked. Our range runs from the 301 and 302 light bolts with a 0.32 inch bolt diameter, through the 303 at 0.39 inch, up to the 304 extra heavy bolt at 0.6 inch in 5 and 8 inch lengths, which can be mounted with carriage bolts for added security.
Why the Hasp Hides Its Screws
A hasp is only as strong as its fixing. On all five of our hasp models, every screw is concealed when the hasp is closed, so the plate cannot be unscrewed while the padlock is in place. The ribbed pressing adds stiffness without extra thickness, because a hasp that twists lets a lever in long before the padlock fails.
Swivel Staple or Rigid Staple
A swivel staple lets the hasp be latched without a padlock, which suits a door that is closed all day and locked at night. A rigid staple always needs the padlock. The 310 double hinge version exists for around-the-corner applications on lockers, chests and tool boxes, where a single hinge cannot follow the geometry.
Key Locking Hasps Remove the Padlock
The 311 key locking hasp carries its own lock body: steel with a die-cast zinc lock body, and a solid brass keyway and tumblers. It always locks in the latched position, and locks can be supplied keyed alike, which is what makes a run of storage cabinets manageable.
Draw Hasps Pull the Door In
A draw hasp is a different tool again. It latches for a tight closing and helps align and draw the door to the frame, so it suits a door or lid that has to seal rather than simply stay shut.
