Same Size Does Not Mean Same Parts

A 4¼ Ft Standard and a 4¼ Ft Short Head share a frame family and a lot of mechanical hardware, but they do not share a crushing chamber. The chamber geometry is the difference, and it is the reason a mantle ordered against the size alone can arrive and not fit.

Where Each One Sits In A Circuit

Standard machines take a coarser feed and are normally used in the secondary position. Short Head machines take a finer feed and a smaller closed side setting, and are normally used in the tertiary position where the product specification is tighter.

A plant that runs both will hold two sets of wear parts even though the two machines look similar from the walkway.

What Changes Between The Two

• Mantle and bowl liner profiles, which is the main practical difference
• Feed opening and the maximum feed size the machine will accept
• Closed side setting range and therefore product size
• Feed plate and feed distributor arrangement in some builds

What Usually Stays The Same

• Main frame family and frame liners
• Countershaft, pinion and the drive side hardware
• Eccentric and bushing sizes within a given frame size
• Socket, socket liner and step bearing plate

That overlap is useful when a rebuild is being planned, because the mechanical part list can often be worked before the configuration question is settled. The wear parts cannot.

How To Confirm Which One You Have

1. Read the machine plate. Configuration is usually stated there.
2. If the plate is gone, measure the feed opening and compare it against the closed side setting the plant runs.
3. Photograph the existing mantle and bowl liner in place before removal.
4. Note the position of the machine in the circuit, secondary or tertiary.
5. Send all of that with the size when you ask for a price.
