How To Identify A Shovel Part Number
A step by step method for getting from a failed component to an orderable part number, including what to photograph.
Why This Is Worth Ten Minutes
The gap between a good enquiry and a poor one is usually a week. A poor enquiry generates questions, and every round trip on a question adds a day. A complete package can be priced immediately.
Electrical Items Are A Special Case
Relay, contactor, diode, thyristor, switch, reactor, fuse and resistor labels fade in a hot cabinet. We can identify the OEM part number for these items and source them from first level distributors, so a photograph of the component in place is often enough to start.
When The Part Has Been Modified On Site
It happens more often than anyone admits. Say so in the enquiry, and send photographs of both the modified part and, if you have one, an unmodified example. Guessing at this stage is what produces a part that does not fit.
Step By Step
- Read The Machine Plate
Record make, model, variant letter and serial number. On a P&H machine the variant letter matters, because 2300XP, 2300XPA, 2300XPB and 2300XPC are not interchangeable throughout. - Look For Markings On The Part
Cast numbers, stamped numbers, paint pen marks from the last rebuild and any tag still attached. Photograph each of them close up, in focus and with even light. - Photograph The Whole Part From Two Angles
One straight on and one at an angle that shows depth. Put a tape measure or a familiar object in the frame so scale is obvious. - Photograph The Mating Position
The hole the part came out of tells an experienced eye as much as the part itself, especially for bushings, sleeves and wear items. - Take Basic Measurements
Outside diameter, inside diameter, overall length, bolt circle and bolt count where they apply. Say how the measurements were taken. - Send It As One Package
Machine details, photographs, measurements, quantity, required date and destination port in one email to [email protected]. Keep the machine model in the subject line. - Confirm Before Anything Is Made
The identified part number, position and quantity come back to you in writing before production or shipment.
