O-Ring Material Selection For Filter Cartridges

Choose EPDM, Viton, Buna, or Silicone o-rings based on fluid and temperature. All rated up to 80℃. Avoid mismatched materials to prevent failure.

The o-ring material must match the fluid chemistry and operating temperature to prevent swelling, hardening, or failure. Using the wrong elastomer can lead to leaks, contamination, or premature change-out.

  • EPDM o-rings are suitable for water, steam, and mild chemicals up to 80℃
  • Viton o-rings resist oils, fuels, and aggressive chemicals up to 80℃
  • Buna o-rings are for general use with water, oils, and mild solvents up to 80℃
  • Silicone o-rings handle high temperatures and steam up to 80℃ but are less resistant to oils and chemicals
  • Always confirm the fluid type and temperature before selecting an o-ring material

Using an incompatible o-ring can result in swelling, cracking, or extrusion under pressure. This leads to bypass flow, contamination, and unplanned downtime.

  • EPDM swells in oils and hydrocarbons, causing seal failure
  • Viton degrades in strong acids and bases, reducing service life
  • Buna hardens in hot water and oxidizes in air, leading to brittleness
  • Silicone loses strength in hydrocarbons and is not recommended for aggressive solvents
  • Mismatched o-rings may pass fluid at rated differential pressure, compromising filtration

Select the o-ring based on the fluid being filtered and the maximum operating temperature. All listed o-rings are rated for up to 80℃.

  • For water and process fluids, EPDM or Buna are suitable options
  • For oils, fuels, or aggressive solvents, use Viton
  • For high-temperature steam or sterilization, consider Silicone
  • Avoid Silicone in hydrocarbon environments
  • Confirm the fluid composition and temperature with your process team

FAQ

Questions On This Topic

Which o-ring material should I use for water at 80℃?
EPDM or Buna are suitable for water at 80℃. EPDM offers better resistance to steam and mild chemicals.
Can I use Viton for organic solvents?
Yes, Viton is recommended for organic solvents and oils. It maintains integrity up to 80℃.
Is Silicone safe for hot water?
Yes, Silicone handles hot water and steam up to 80℃. Avoid it in hydrocarbon environments.
What happens if I use Buna with oil?
Buna will swell and degrade in oil, leading to seal failure and potential leakage.
How do I know which o-ring is in my cartridge?
Check the code in the product name. E=EPDM, V=Viton, B=Buna, S=Silicone. Tell us your cartridge code and we will confirm the o-ring material.
