The Chrome and Grey Spheres Are Reference Tools for Lighting

A visual effects team uses a chrome sphere and a grey sphere together to capture the lighting environment on a film or VFX plate. The chrome sphere reflects the entire scene, recording the direction, intensity and colour of all light sources. The grey sphere captures the ambient light and shadow levels, providing a baseline for lighting reconstruction in post-production.

The Sphere Must Be True and Consistent to Be Reliable

A usable reference sphere must be a true sphere, with no distortion in shape. The surface must be consistent across the entire shell, with no scratches, dents or uneven polish. Only a perfectly formed and finished sphere gives accurate data for HDRI mapping.

Size and Position Matter for Camera Accuracy

The sphere must be large enough to fill the frame from the camera’s position, but small enough to fit on a tripod or stand without obstructing the shot. The standard sizes offered are 6 cm, 12 cm, 25 cm, and custom sizes on request, allowing the team to match the camera’s field of view.

The Setup Is Designed for Flexibility on Set

Each sphere set includes adjustable heads that allow the team to position the spheres at the correct distance apart and angle towards the camera. The tripod mount uses a 1/4 inch UNC thread for small cameras, and can be upgraded to 3/8 inch UNC on request.

Transport and Protection for On-Set Use

The spheres are packed in a Peli Storm Case 2100, with external dimensions of 45 cm x 36 cm x 20 cm. The case is waterproof, shock-proof and compression-proof, protecting the polished surfaces during transit. The kit includes carbon fibre handles for easy carrying.

The Fabrication Process Matches the Need for Precision

Each sphere is formed by shaping steel plate over a mould, welding two hemispheres, polishing the weld until it disappears, and mirror polishing the shell. This ensures the surface is smooth and reflective, critical for accurate light capture.

What This Means for Your VFX Workflow

The production time for a custom set is 35 to 45 days depending on the piece. The spheres are shipped in a wooden case with a Factory Direct and Door to Door Delivery. The finish cannot be touched up on site, so the packaging is part of the product’s integrity.
