QK702 Fluoro-Modified Acrylate Levelling Agent

Polyacrylate levelling agent for waterborne, solventborne and UV systems that lifts gloss without hurting recoatability.

Positioned against EFKA 3772

Product Overview

QK702 is a fluoro-modified polyacrylate levelling agent for waterborne coatings, solventborne coatings, printing inks and room-temperature-curing plastics. It improves flow and long-wave levelling and raises gloss, while preventing cratering. It lowers surface tension only slightly, so recoating and intercoat adhesion are unaffected and clear varnish stays clear.

Key Benefits

  • Improves long-wave levelling, which is what the eye reads as a smooth finish
  • Raises gloss in both coatings and inks
  • Prevents cratering and shrinkage defects
  • Only a slight drop in surface tension, so recoat and intercoat adhesion are safe
  • Does not cause haze in clear varnish or fogging in pigmented colours

Who It Is For

  • Formulators of high-gloss industrial and decorative topcoats
  • UV ink and overprint varnish producers
  • Plastic coating formulators working at ambient cure

Problems It Solves

  • Orange peel and long-wave unevenness on sprayed topcoats
  • Cratering caused by contamination or poor substrate wetting
  • Levelling additives that block recoating or dull a clear varnish

Application Scenarios

  • Waterborne and solventborne industrial topcoats where appearance is graded
  • Solvent-free and waterborne UV inks and overprint varnish
  • Room-temperature-curing plastic coatings
  • Multi-coat systems where the next layer must still adhere

Technical Features

  • Polyacrylate chemistry at 60% non-volatile content
  • Supply viscosity 200-500 cps at 25C
  • Can be added at any stage, including post-addition
  • Works across waterborne, solventborne and solvent-free formulations

Recommended Dosage

All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.

On total formulation, as supplied0.05-0.5%

Use Guide

  • Stir the drum well before drawing product.
  • Add at any stage of manufacture, including post-addition to a finished batch.
  • Start at the low end of 0.05-0.5% and ladder up; over-dosing levelling agents usually shows first as a recoat problem.

Quality Control On Your Side

  • Grade long-wave and short-wave levelling on sprayed panels, not by eye in the can
  • Run an intercoat adhesion test whenever the dosage changes
  • Check clear varnish for haze at the top of the range
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.

Silicone levelling agentLowers surface tension only slightly, so recoating and intercoat adhesion are not compromised.
Non-modified acrylateThe fluoro modification adds crater resistance on top of the flow improvement.
QK706EQK702 targets flow, levelling and gloss; QK706E targets wetting, dynamic surface tension and foam.

Questions

QK702 Fluoro-Modified Acrylate Levelling Agent Questions

Will QK702 stop us recoating?
The data sheet states it only slightly reduces surface tension and does not affect recoating or intercoat adhesion. Confirm with an adhesion test in your own system.
Can it be used in UV inks?
Yes. It is suitable for solvent-free UV and waterborne UV inks as well as overprint varnish.
When can it be added?
At any stage, including post-addition.
What dosage range is normal?
0.05 to 0.5% on the total formulation as supplied.
