QK3770 Wetting and Dispersing Agent

VOC-free block copolymer dispersant for waterborne wood and industrial coatings and resin-free concentrates.

Positioned against BYK 190

Product Overview

QK3770 is a high molecular weight block copolymer carrying pigment affinity groups, supplied at 40% active in water with no VOC below 1500 ppm. It wets and disperses pigment in waterborne coatings and pigment concentrates, cutting grind time and mill base viscosity while raising gloss, colour strength, transparency and hiding power, especially on organic pigments and carbon black.

Key Benefits

  • No VOC below 1500 ppm, so it does not eat into a waterborne VOC budget
  • Cuts grind time and mill base viscosity, which frees mill capacity
  • Raises gloss, colour strength, transparency and hiding power
  • Allows higher pigment loading in the same mill base
  • 24-month shelf life stored between 5 and 40C

Who It Is For

  • Waterborne wood and furniture coating formulators
  • Pigment concentrate producers working without resin
  • Plants where the bead mill is the bottleneck

Problems It Solves

  • Long grind cycles and high mill base viscosity
  • Weak colour strength and poor jetness on organic pigment and carbon black
  • Dispersants that bring co-solvent into a low-VOC formulation

Application Scenarios

  • Waterborne wood coatings
  • Waterborne industrial coatings
  • Resin-free pigment concentrate production
  • Carbon black tinters where jetness matters

Technical Features

  • Block copolymer structure with pigment affinity groups for firm anchoring
  • 40 +/- 2% active in water, pH 6-8
  • Density approximately 1.06 g/cm3
  • Grinding must be done in water only, without resin, amine or co-solvent

Recommended Dosage

All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.

Inorganic pigments10-15%
Organic pigments30-70%
Titanium dioxide5-10%
Carbon black60-120%

Use Guide

  • Grind in water only. Resin, amine and co-solvent must not be present during the grind.
  • Mix the additive with water first, then add pigment and grind until fully dispersed.
  • Dosage is calculated on pigment, so the carbon black figure of 60-120% is on the carbon black, not on the batch.
  • Avoid direct skin contact. If contact occurs, rinse with soap and water.

Quality Control On Your Side

  • Measure grind fineness and mill base viscosity before and after the change
  • Check jetness and undertone on carbon black tints against a reference
  • Store concentrate samples at 5C and 40C to confirm stability
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.

QK3755Very similar chemistry and dosage; QK3755 tolerates a wider organic pigment range and is rated for waterborne ink.
QK3740QK3740 is 100% active with no water carried in; QK3770 is 40% active and easier to meter at low addition.
Polyacid dispersantBlock copolymer anchoring holds organic pigment and carbon black that a polyacid cannot stabilise.

Questions

QK3770 Wetting and Dispersing Agent Questions

Why must the grind be resin-free?
Resin, amine and co-solvent compete with the additive for the pigment surface. The data sheet requires grinding in water alone, then letting down afterwards.
Is the 60-120% carbon black figure on the batch?
No. All dispersant dosages are calculated on the pigment, so 60-120% is on the weight of carbon black.
Does QK3770 add VOC?
No. It is declared VOC-free below 1500 ppm.
What is the shelf life?
24 months from the production date, stored between 5 and 40C away from direct sunlight.
