QK3320 Polyurethane Wetting and Dispersing Agent

80% active polyurethane dispersant for highly polar solventborne systems: automotive, motorcycle and coil coatings.

Product Overview

QK3320 is a polyurethane-type wetting and dispersing agent for solvent systems, supplied at 80% active in EGDA. The high molecular weight polyurethane backbone carries pigment affinity groups, so it wets fast, cuts grind viscosity sharply and keeps pigment stabilised against flocculation. It is aimed at highly polar resin systems, which is where automotive and coil coatings sit.

Key Benefits

  • 80% active content, so little carrier enters a tightly balanced formulation
  • Strong viscosity reduction during grinding
  • Keeps pigment stably dispersed and prevents flocculation
  • Raises gloss, colour strength, transparency and hiding power
  • Recoverable by post-addition if the addition order goes wrong

Who It Is For

  • Automotive and motorcycle coating formulators
  • Coil coating producers
  • Industrial plants working with high-polarity resin systems

Problems It Solves

  • Flocculation and colour drift in polar solventborne systems
  • Grind viscosity that blocks higher pigment loading
  • Batches where the additive went in after the pigment and the mill base is now unstable

Application Scenarios

  • Automotive and motorcycle coatings
  • Highly polar resin industrial coatings
  • Coil coatings

Technical Features

  • High molecular weight polyurethane copolymer with pigment affinity groups
  • 80 +/- 2% active, solvent EGDA
  • Density approximately 1.05 g/cm3
  • Addition order matters: resin and solvent first, then additive, then pigment

Recommended Dosage

All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.

Organic pigments10-30%
Titanium dioxide3-5%
Carbon black60-120%

Use Guide

  • Premix the resin and solvent components first, add the additive slowly and mix evenly, then add pigment.
  • If the addition order was wrong, it can be corrected by post-addition, but the additive must go in slowly under high shear.
  • Keep drums between 10 and 40C and out of direct sunlight.
  • Avoid direct skin contact; rinse with soap and water if it occurs.

Quality Control On Your Side

  • Rub-out test on mixed shades to confirm no flocculation
  • Record grind viscosity so the benefit is measurable against the previous dispersant
  • Confirm gloss on cured panels, not on wet film
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.

QK3340QK3340 is 45% active for alkyd, acrylic and polyester; QK3320 is 80% active polyurethane for highly polar systems.
QK3310QK3310 targets epoxy and UV at 100% active; QK3320 targets automotive and coil at 80% active.
Waterborne block copolymerBuilt for solvent systems, so no water is introduced into a solventborne formulation.
