Chip Size Sheet Size and Why Orders Come Up Short
Mosaic is specified by the chip and bought by the sheet. Mixing the two up is the most common reason a pallet arrives and the job is still short.
The three dimensions that matter
Chip size is the individual piece — 25 x 25 mm, 1" x 2", 38.6 x 74 mm and so on. It decides how the surface reads and how tightly the tile follows a curve.
Sheet size is what you actually order — for example a 283 x 308 mm mesh sheet, or a 12" x 12" sheet of 6" x 6" tile. Take-offs must be done in sheets.
Thickness matters at junctions. An 8 mm pool tile and a 20 mm outdoor paver cannot meet flush without a detail, and that detail is cheaper to design than to improvise on site.
Converting a schedule into sheets
Work out the net area or the linear run, convert to sheets using the published sheet size, then add for cuts. Straight rectangular runs waste little; radii, steps and beach entries waste a lot.
Some catalogue items publish coverage directly — several porcelain pool items state a box yield such as 44 pieces to one square metre — which makes the conversion simpler. Where the original specification did not state it, ask rather than assume.
Why mixed formats in one series help
Several series are published in more than one format — Semporna in 1" x 2" and 2" x 3", Carrara ceramic in 75 x 300, 100 x 200 and 100 x 300 mm. Using two formats of the same series lets you change the scale of the pattern at a feature without introducing a second colour reference.
Before you place the order
Confirm the sheet size on the product page, confirm the format matches what the installer has priced, and order the waste allowance in the same batch rather than as a top-up later.

Why does the product page sometimes show two sizes?
Because the series is produced in more than one format, or because the chip and the sheet are both published. Chip size describes the piece; sheet size is the ordering unit.
What if the thickness is not listed?
We publish thickness only where the original product specification stated it, and mark the rest to be confirmed. Ask us and we will check with the factory for that series rather than estimate.
How much waste should I allow?
It depends entirely on geometry and layout. Send the drawing or the take-off and we will look at it with you before the order is placed.
