Count the views you will still want in a year
Four channels covers front, rear and two sides, which is the standard layout for a truck or a delivery van. Six channels adds a cabin and a door view, which is where most buses land. Eight channels is for articulated vehicles, coaches with several doors, or machines where a working attachment needs its own view. Channels are cheaper to buy at the start than to retrofit.
Storage is a duty cycle question
The number of hours a recorder holds depends on channels, resolution, frame rate and card or disk size at the same time. Decide first how far back you need to be able to look: one shift, one day, one week. Then size the storage to that, and set the resolution to what is genuinely needed on each channel rather than the maximum on all of them.
SD card or hard disk
SD storage has no moving parts, which suits vehicles that vibrate hard, and it is simple to swap. Hard disk storage gives more hours for the money and suits vehicles with a stable mounting position. Some models take both, which lets you record continuously to disk and keep event clips on the card.
Do not skip GPS and G-sensor
A clip without a time and a position is hard to use in a dispute. GPS gives you the route and the speed alongside the picture; the G-sensor marks the moment something happened so you are not scrubbing through hours of video. WiFi or mobile network download is what stops someone having to walk to the vehicle with a laptop.
