Choosing The Right Vehicle Monitor Size
Start from the number of views, not the dashboard
One camera on a van needs a small screen. Four views on a bus need a screen big enough that a quadrant is still readable at a glance. As a rule the screen has to stay legible when the picture is divided, so count the views first and pick the size second.
Practical sizes
3.5 and 4.3 inch suit a single reversing view in a cab with almost no dashboard room. 5 inch, including foldable versions, suits vans and light trucks. 7 inch is the most common vehicle size and takes two or three inputs comfortably. 9 and 10.1 inch are for buses, coaches and machines running several cameras or an AHD picture worth the extra area.
The specification lines that matter
Resolution, because a 7 inch panel at a low resolution looks worse than a 5 inch panel at a higher one. Number and type of video inputs. Trigger inputs, which decide whether the screen switches automatically on reverse or on an indicator. Input voltage, normally DC12-24V so one part number fits both car and truck systems. Working temperature, because a cab in summer is not an office.
Mounting and glare
Check whether the model has a removable sunshade and how it mounts: bracket, desktop stand, headrest or mirror. A screen that is legible on the bench and washed out on the windscreen has not solved anything.
