AHD or Analog for a Vehicle Camera System
What the two formats are
Analog vehicle cameras output a CVBS signal, the format that vehicle monitors have accepted for decades. AHD carries a high definition picture, 720P or 1080P, over the same coaxial or aviation cable an analog camera uses. That is the whole point of AHD: the resolution goes up without the cable in the vehicle changing.
Where the difference actually shows
At a reversing distance of two or three metres, an analog camera is usually enough to see a bollard or a person behind the vehicle. The difference appears when you need detail rather than presence: a number plate, a label on a pallet, a face at the door of a bus. That is a resolution question, and analog runs out first.
The catch to check before ordering
An AHD camera needs an AHD monitor or an AHD recorder at the other end. An AHD signal into an analog-only monitor gives no picture. If you are upgrading in stages, order monitors that accept both, and check the supported formats line on the monitor specification, which lists entries such as 720P@25/30, 720P@50/60 and 1080P@25/30.
How to decide
If the system is new, start at AHD unless budget forces otherwise, because the cable is the expensive part and AHD reuses it. If you are adding cameras to an existing analog fleet, keep the fleet consistent and change format at the next monitor replacement rather than mixing on one vehicle.
