S260GD to S550GD Structural Galvanized Steel Strip

Structural galvanized strip, zinc 30 to 350 g/m2, 0.40 to 1.0 mm, slit 5 to 1500 mm.

Overview

What This Grade Range Is For

The GD grades are specified by minimum yield strength, which is what a roll formed structural section is actually designed around. S260GD suits general sections; S550GD lets a purlin or stud carry its load in noticeably thinner material. The zinc comes from the same 30 to 350 gram per square metre range as the forming grades, so structural performance and corrosion life are chosen separately. Gauge runs 0.40 mm to 1.0 mm.

Key Benefits

  • Yield strength is the specified property, so section design has a number to work from
  • Higher grades allow thinner sections and lower shipped weight
  • Galvanized and structural in a single product, with no separate coating operation
  • Coating weight independent of grade across the full 30 to 350 gram per square metre range

Problems It Solves

  • A section is designed in mild steel and then painted, adding a process and a failure point
  • Thickness is driven by load rather than by function, pushing up weight and freight
  • The required strength grade is available only in widths far beyond the section needed

Who It Is For

  • Roll formers producing building framing components
  • Racking and storage system manufacturers
  • Steel building component suppliers

Application Scenarios

  • Roll formed purlins, studs and track
  • Light steel framing components
  • Racking and shelving uprights
  • Structural trays and decking profiles

Technical Features

  • Grade designation states minimum yield strength in megapascals, from 260 to 550
  • Supplied annealed with a hot dip zinc coating
  • Formability decreases as the grade rises, so roll forming setups need review on a grade change
Manufacturing Process

How This Material Reaches You

Cold rolling to gauge
Continuous hot dip galvanizing
Skin passing
Slitting to the section developed width
Recoiling and packing

Materials

  • Hot dipped galvanized structural steel, grades S260GD to S550GD

Quality Control

  • Yield strength confirmed against the ordered grade
  • Coating weight verified before release
  • Slit width held to the developed width the roll former needs

Customization Options

  • Grade selected against the calculated section load
  • Slit width matched to the developed width of the profile
  • Coating weight set by the exposure class of the building element
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Compared WithWhat Changes
DX51D to DX56D Galvanized StripSame zinc, different steel. DX grades are chosen for forming behaviour; GD grades are chosen for a stated yield strength.
HSLA 260 to 550 Cold Rolled StripComparable strength range without the coating. HSLA suits enclosed or separately finished parts; GD suits anything exposed.
Use Guide

Getting The Specification Right First Time

  1. Design the section against the grade minimum yield, not against a nominal mild steel figure
  2. Re-check roll forming setup when the grade changes, because springback moves with strength
  3. Order the slit width to the developed width of the profile so nothing is trimmed later
  4. Choose the coating weight from the exposure class of the finished building element

What to Include in Your Enquiry

  • The part and how it is formed, including the tightest bend radius
  • The service environment and expected design life
  • The strip width your die or roll former actually needs
  • Coil inner diameter and maximum coil weight your decoiler accepts

S260GD to S550GD Structural Galvanized Steel Strip Questions

What does GD mean in S350GD?
S is structural, 350 is the minimum yield strength in megapascals, and GD denotes the hot dip galvanized condition.
Can I get structural grades thinner than 0.40 mm?
Not in this family. Below 0.40 mm the DX forming grades cover down to 0.15 mm, but they are not specified on yield strength.
Does a higher grade need a different zinc coating?
No. The 30 to 350 gram per square metre range applies across all the GD grades, so the two decisions stay independent.
Is S550GD formable?
It roll forms, but it is considerably less ductile than S260GD. Bend radii need opening up and springback compensation increases.
