GSM Explained For Apparel Buyers
Gram weight is the most quoted and least verified number in an apparel order.
What the number means
GSM is the weight of one square metre of fabric. A 180 gsm jersey is a standard tee; 280 gsm is a heavyweight tee; 300 gsm and up is hoodie and fleece territory. Our heavyweight tee programme runs at 280 gsm and the blank oversized hoodie at 300 gsm.
Why it drifts
Fabric is bought by the kilo, so a lighter cloth costs less per garment. A 20 gsm reduction is invisible in a photograph and worth real money across a production run.
How to hold it
Write the gram weight into the order confirmation, ask for the fabric hanger, and have it checked before the fabric is cut rather than after the garments are sewn.
Gram weight is not quality on its own
A heavy fabric knitted loosely still pills. Ask about yarn count and knit construction alongside the gram weight, particularly on combed cotton and French terry.
