How To Choose Drawer Slides For Cabinet Work

Length, extension, closing action and material - the four decisions behind a drawer runner, worked through against the 45 mm three fold silent slide.

Start From The Cabinet Not The Catalogue

A drawer slide is chosen by the internal depth of the cabinet, not by the width of the drawer or by what is in stock. Measure from the inside face of the front to the inside face of the back panel, then pick the longest runner that fits inside that dimension. Choosing the slide after the carcase is built is the most common reason a drawer either will not close or rattles in an oversized opening.

Length

The three fold silent slide is supplied in eight lengths - 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 inches. Short runners at 6 to 10 inches suit vanity drawers, bedside units and shallow office pedestals. The 12 to 16 inch range covers most kitchen base units and wardrobe internal drawers. The 18 and 20 inch runners are for deep kitchen pan drawers and full-depth filing. The width is 45 mm across all eight, which is what lets a project standardise on one clearance dimension.

Extension

A three fold slide has three members and runs out to full extension, meaning the drawer clears the cabinet front entirely. A two fold, partial extension runner is cheaper and leaves the back quarter of the drawer permanently inside the carcase. In a shallow drawer that is tolerable. In a deep kitchen drawer it makes a third of the storage you paid for unreachable, and it is the detail buyers most often regret economising on.

Closing Action

Silent, or soft, closing means the runner catches the drawer in the last stretch of travel and draws it home under control rather than letting it slam. The comfort argument is obvious; the maintenance argument is the one that decides commercial specifications. In student accommodation, rental apartments and shared offices, slammed drawers loosen fronts and damage stops, and that becomes a recurring repair ticket. Specifying a silent close runner is cheaper than answering those tickets for four years.

Material And Finish

This runner is black iron. Steel-bodied runners are the norm for cabinet work because the load path through a drawer runner is concentrated in a small ball race and needs a material that will not deform under it. What matters at specification stage is that the whole project uses one runner family, so replacements in year three are the same part as the originals.

Packing And Lead Time

Slides are packed two pieces per pair, which is one drawer's worth - useful when ordering spares, because you order in drawers rather than in pieces. Production is 3 to 10 working days after approval, and delivery time on top of that depends on the shipping mode chosen. For a refit with a fixed window, work backwards from the installation date through the shipping mode before confirming.

A Short Specification Checklist

Measure the internal cabinet depth and pick the longest runner that fits. Decide whether the back of the drawer has to be reachable - if yes, full extension. Decide whether the setting is high-turnover - if yes, silent close. Standardise the width across the project, here 45 mm. Order spares in pairs at the same time as the main quantity, while the specification is still current.
