Rayon and Metallic Yarn Behave Differently on the Head

Rayon embroidery thread runs like a fine viscose filament: it feeds smoothly through the tension discs and lays flat in the satin stitch, but it is slippery and will slip off a cone if the thread stand is not set up right. Metallic yarn is stiffer and kinks, so it needs slower head speed, looser tension and a larger needle eye than the same design would use in rayon. Planning which parts of a thobe or abaya design run in which thread lets the operator set up once instead of chasing breaks every few panels.

What Denier Tells You Before You Stitch

Our rayon comes in 120D/2 for fine detail lettering and motif work, and 450D/1 where you need a bold, raised line that covers the ground fabric in one pass. Matching denier to the stitch length and the underlay keeps dense areas from puckering a lightweight abaya fabric.

ST and MS Metallic Yarn Styles at 150D/1

Our metallic yarn is offered in ST and MS styles, both 150D/1, wound at 100 g net thread weight on a 55 g cone. The ST style is the standard construction for general gold and silver embroidery work, and the MS style gives a different surface look on the finished motif. Because both share the same denier and put-up, a workshop can switch between them without changing needles or tensions.

Why a Real Silver Metallic Yarn Oxidises

A silver metallic yarn that contains actual silver will dull and darken over time. That is the metal reacting with air and sweat, not a defect in the yarn. We apply a double shrunk surface treatment to our silver metallic yarn to slow this down and keep the yarn stable on the cone and in the wash. If a supplier claims a silver yarn that never changes colour at all, it is usually a coated substitute rather than a silver yarn.
