Why a timer saves anything at all

A shower has no natural end. People leave it when they feel like it, and in the absence of any signal that estimate drifts long. A timer supplies the missing signal, and that is the entire mechanism — there is no clever hardware in it.

Digital or sand is a question about the user

Setting the target

Four and five minutes are the times the sand timers in this range are built to, and they are a sensible place to start. A target that is too aggressive gets ignored on the second day, which is worse than a modest one that sticks.
