Why a slat is a structural part

A bed slat carries the mattress and the people on it, and it does so in bending, repeatedly, for years. That is a structural duty, and it is why the two failure modes are so consistent: the slat breaks at a weak point, or it takes a permanent set and stops supporting. Both are specification failures more often than material failures.

Laminated against sawn

A sawn slat breaks at a knot, because that is where the grain runs out. Laminating removes that point: veneers are laid up and pressed, so bending load spreads along the slat. Both ranges here are laminated, and the birch range is processed as LVL, laminated veneer lumber.

Birch or poplar

Birch LVL slats support up to 300kg and carry FSC certification, which is what a retailer asks for when chain of custody is part of the buying terms. Poplar is a fast growing, resource rich species with no artificial additives, laminated for strength, and it is the economical choice for volume residential frames.

Geometry comes from the frame, not the price list

Width to 170mm, thickness to 25mm and length to 1750mm, cut to your drawing. Slat count and spacing belong to the frame design; end profiling belongs to the holders you use. A slat that does not seat fully in its holder is the one that pops out in service.

Camber and what it is for

A cambered slat, formed by bending and installed crown upwards, gives the base some suspension. A flat slat suits a fixed platform base. Deciding this late, after the holders are chosen, is how factories end up with slats that will not fit their own frames.

Handling before assembly

Store slats flat and dry. A bundle stored on edge or left damp takes a set, and a slat with a set behaves like a failed slat as soon as it is under a mattress.
