The Role and Application of Drum Gaskets

Drum gaskets prevent leakage, contamination and damage to the contents. They are made from EPDM, natural rubber, BUNA, FKM, silicone and PE, and the selection rules differ between open head and closed head drums.

Why Gaskets Matter

Gaskets are indispensable components in both open head and closed head drums. They maintain the integrity and safety of the drum during storage and transportation, and they are usually where a containment failure begins.

Gaskets for Open Head Drums

In open head drums the height of the gasket is determined by the gap between the drum lid and the opening edge. Select gaskets that give a snug, secure fit, and adjust the length according to the type and material of the drum.

Clamping rings are commonly used on the top of open head drums, where lids are frequently opened and closed. That places strict requirements on the size and durability of the gasket, which has to withstand repeated use without losing integrity.

Gaskets for Closed Head Drums

For closed head drums the material choice is the critical decision. Compatibility between the filling liquid and the gasket must be considered carefully to avoid chemical reactions that compromise the seal.

Sizes and shapes should be customised to fit the closures securely, and factors such as high temperature, high pressure, riveting height and mould considerations all have to be taken into account.

Getting It Right

Considering material compatibility, customisation and environmental conditions together is what enhances drum integrity. Gaskets tailored to the specific drum requirement are a small part of the cost and most of the risk.
