OEM or ODM: Which One You Actually Need

The difference in one line

OEM means the design is yours and a factory produces it. ODM means you start from a product the factory already makes and change what matters to you. We provide both, with a portfolio of products and services to suit customers of all sizes and with all needs.

When ODM is the right answer

If you are facing strict time-to-market and want to reduce costs, you can use pre-engineered and time-tested products with minimal modifications. If the differentiation you are selling is the brand, the packaging, the colour and the assortment, then ODM gets you there without paying for tooling or for someone else's development time.

When OEM is worth it

When the product itself is the differentiation: a mechanism, a form factor or a feature that does not exist in the market. That is worth tooling for. Tooling for a colour change is not.

The honest test

Write down what a customer would notice if you bought the nearest existing product and rebranded it. If the list is short, you are describing an ODM project. If it is long and mechanical, it is OEM.

Either way, the process is the same after the decision

Specification fixed, sample approved, production followed, order inspected before shipment. The route in differs; the discipline afterwards does not.
