Replacing A Lead Acid Battery With LiFePO4

Footprint, terminal, charge voltage and current checks for swapping a sealed lead acid block for a 12.8V LiFePO4 pack.

Four Checks Before You Order

Footprint, terminal, charge voltage and current. Get those four right and the swap is mechanical.

Footprint

Our LFP12xx packs are built in lead acid style ABS cases. Read the dimension column as T*W*H*TH, where TH is the total height over the terminals. LFP1206, LFP1207 and LFP1209 all share 151*65*94*100mm, so one case takes 6Ah, 7Ah or 9Ah.

Terminal

F2 on the small packs, M5 on the 24Ah, M6 on the 40Ah and 54Ah, M8 on the 100Ah and above. The terminal is published on each product page.

Charge Voltage

A 12.8V LiFePO4 pack charges at 14.6V and cuts off at 10.0V. Most lead acid chargers land in that window, which is why our packs can be charged using most standard lead acid chargers, but check the top of charge before you connect.

Current

Lead acid is often oversized on capacity to get the current. Compare your actual load with the published continuous and maximum discharge figures. A LFP1230 gives 6A continuous and 30A maximum, which is a different shape of capability from the block it replaces.

What You Gain

About half the weight, more than 2000 cycles at 80% capacity remaining, no maintenance, internal cell balancing, and a -20℃ to 60℃ discharge window.
