How To Read A Neck Finish
A neck finish is written as two numbers, for example 28/410. The first number is the outside diameter of the bottle neck in millimetres. The second number is the finish series, which describes the thread profile and the height of the neck.
The diameter is the easy part. The series is where packaging projects go wrong: 28/400 and 28/410 have the same 28 mm diameter and are not interchangeable. A 400 finish uses a shorter neck with a single lead thread. A 410 finish uses a taller neck. A 415 finish is taller again. If you fit the wrong series the closure will either bottom out before it seals or run out of thread.

Checking Before You Order
- Read the finish from the bottle drawing rather than measuring a moulded sample, which can be out of round.
- Confirm whether your filler runs the bottle on an automatic capper, since torque settings differ between 400 and 410 series.
- Send the bottle height and shoulder profile so the dip tube can be cut to length.
- Ask for samples and fit them to your own bottle before committing to a production quantity.
