How Medical Ultrasound Equipment Works and How to Choose It
Ultrasound above 20,000 hertz is inaudible, highly directional and penetrates tissue. Diagnostic work uses 1 to 5 megahertz. This guide explains the operating principle and what separates a palm system from a laptop system.
What Ultrasound Actually Is
Ultrasound means sound waves above 20,000 hertz, a range the human ear cannot hear. Those waves are strongly directional and penetrate well, which is why the technology suits imaging inside the body. Medical diagnostic work typically uses frequencies between 1 and 5 megahertz.
The Operating Principle
The principle resembles sonar. Ultrasound is transmitted into the body, where it reflects and refracts at tissue interfaces and is absorbed and attenuated as it travels. Different tissues reflect, refract and absorb to different degrees, so the wave patterns, curves and images the instrument displays let a clinician tell one tissue from another and judge whether the organ under examination is working normally.

Palm Systems Versus Laptop Systems
A palm system under 1 kg goes into a stall or a field with wireless charging and a WiFi link to the display, and covers B, 2B, B/M, C and PW modes to a 305 mm depth. A laptop system trades that portability for a 15 inch screen, HDMI output for teaching, three USB ports and two network ports, and it carries four probe types in one aluminium case.

Choosing Probes
Probe choice decides what you can examine. Convex probes cover general abdominal depth, linear probes suit shallow structures, rectal probes serve reproductive work and micro-convex probes fit small windows. Order the probe set against the examinations you actually run, not against the longest list on the datasheet.
What to Confirm Before Ordering
Confirm the operating modes, the maximum scanning depth, the cine-loop storage and the wireless range if the display is separate from the probe. For field use, confirm the case, the charging method and the total package weight, since those decide whether the system travels with you or stays on a bench.

FAQ
Questions On This Topic
What frequency does medical diagnostic ultrasound use
Typically 1 to 5 megahertz. Ultrasound in general means any sound wave above 20,000 hertz, which is above human hearing.
Why do different tissues look different on the screen
Because the morphology and structure of each tissue differ, they reflect, refract and absorb ultrasound to different degrees. The instrument shows that as wave patterns, curves or images.
How deep can a portable system scan
The palm system reaches a maximum scanning depth of 305 mm, which covers deep structures in large animals.
Can one system run several probe types
Yes. The laptop colour Doppler supports convex, linear, rectal and micro-convex probes from one system.
