How to Import Medical Devices From China
Importing medical goods follows the same steps as any import, with two differences that decide whether the shipment clears: device classification and certification files that match the destination market.
Start From the Product and the Market
Identify the product and then the market rules that apply to it, in that order. Market research tells you whether demand exists. Regulatory research tells you whether the version you want can be listed at all. A whitening gel formulation that sells in one market may be restricted in another, and a device without the right classification cannot enter a hospital purchasing process.
Identify a Supplier
Online directories and trade fairs are the usual starting points. When you evaluate a supplier, look at reputation, production capacity, quality control and pricing together rather than price alone. Ask what documentation travels with the goods before you ask for a discount.

Negotiate the Terms in Writing
Agree price, payment terms, delivery time, packaging and the document set in a written contract. Packaging is not a detail: carton counts and shipping marks decide how the goods are handled at the destination, and carton dimensions decide how much container space you pay for.
Get the Certification Files Before the Goods
The single most common cause of a stuck shipment is certification arriving after the goods. CE, device classification, test reports and material safety documents should be emailed to you and to your broker before shipment, not packed in the container.
Plan the Loading
Ask for package dimensions and gross weight at quotation stage so your forwarder can quote before you commit. Beds, trolleys and stands ship disassembled for a reason, and a loading plan agreed before production usually saves more than the unit price negotiation did.

Plan the After-Sales Position
Decide before ordering who handles a fault: warranty terms, spare parts and whether online technical support is enough for your market. For equipment, order the spare consumable parts with the first shipment rather than after the first failure.

FAQ
Questions On This Topic
What documents should I have before the goods ship
The certification files for your market, the commercial invoice and packing list, and the transport documents agreed in your contract. Ask for certification by email before shipment.
How do I avoid paying for wasted container space
Ask for carton dimensions and gross weight at quotation stage and agree the loading plan before production starts.
What payment terms are typical
T/T is the common term, with PayPal, Western Union and credit card accepted on some smaller orders. Agree the terms in writing before production.
Can I test a product before a full order
On several lines a small stock order ships in 1 to 3 days, which lets you test a market before committing to an OEM run.
