Soft-Shell Versus Hard-Shell Hyperbaric Chambers

Build type decides installation, duty cycle and resale far more than pressure does. Here is how the two families actually differ.

The short version

A soft-shell chamber is a high-strength TPU envelope with a reinforced nylon cover, sealed with a zipper system and held in shape by an internal frame, an external frame or inflatable air columns. A hard-shell chamber is a rigid body - aluminium alloy, aerospace aluminium profile or stainless steel - with a door and, usually, automatic pressure control.

The common assumption is that soft means low pressure and hard means high pressure. That is not true in this range: the soft-shell OTS20 delivers a true 2.0 ATA and the hard-shell OHD15 is rated up to 1.5 ATA.

Duty cycle is the deciding factor

A chamber used once a day by one household and a chamber used eight times a day by paying clients are different machines. Zippers, soft windows and manual valves are perfectly adequate for the first and wear noticeably under the second. If the chamber is a revenue line, the rigid body and automatic control usually pay for themselves in operator time alone.

What soft shell buys you

Three things: the unit gets into rooms rigid chambers cannot reach, it can be moved when the room changes use, and the landed cost is lower because it weighs less. For a distributor, that last point decides whether a demonstration unit can be air-freighted.

What hard shell buys you

Repeatability and presentation. One-touch pressurisation removes operator variance between sessions, dual electronic and mechanical safety layers cover continuous operation, and a finished cabin with electric seating reads as clinical equipment in a client-facing room.

The middle option

The OTL19 is worth a look if the decision is close. It is a soft-shell chamber with fully automatic pressure control from 1.1 to 1.9 ATA, a reinforced external support frame and a protective cover - most of the operating behaviour of a rigid cabin, in a 45 kg envelope.

Buyer questions

Questions On This Topic

Is a soft-shell chamber less safe?

Both families ship with layered pressure protection - automatic relief, manual release and internal gauges - and every unit is pressure-tested before dispatch. The difference is duty cycle and wear behaviour, not a different safety concept.

Which holds its value better?

Rigid chambers generally hold resale value better because they are capital equipment with a longer service expectation. No resale figures are published, so treat this as general market behaviour rather than a guarantee.

Can a soft-shell chamber be left inflated permanently?

It is designed to be pressurised for sessions and depressurised afterwards. Storage and daily-use guidance is supplied with the chamber and over WhatsApp.
