Titanium Self Tapping Screws
Grade 5 titanium self tapping screws in M4 and M5 with a Torx drive and a wide flat bearing face under the head.
Overview
What This Range Is
These are Ti-6Al-4V self tapping screws with a thread form that cuts its own mating thread as it is driven. The head carries a broad flat bearing face, so clamp load is spread over a larger contact area than a plain pan head gives. All sizes in this range use an internal Torx drive.
Every size in the range is made in Grade 5 titanium. The head geometry and the drive size are listed for each size in the table below, taken from the product data for that size rather than from a general specification.
Problems This Range Solves
- Fastening into a single component where there is no room or no budget for a tapped hole or an insert
- Assemblies where a steel screw would corrode at the joint and stain or seize the surrounding part
- Weight sensitive assemblies that still need a screw with a usable head bearing area
- Non magnetic assemblies where a stainless self tapping screw is not acceptable

Material
Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Reference Data
Published values for the alloy and for ASTM B348. They describe the material, not a batch certificate.
| Alloy designation | Ti-6Al-4V, ASTM Grade 5 |
|---|---|
| UNS number | R56400 |
| Nominal composition | 6 percent aluminium, 4 percent vanadium, balance titanium |
| Alloy class | Alpha beta alloy |
| Density | 4.43 g/cm³ |
| Minimum tensile strength | 895 MPa / 130 ksi |
| Minimum yield strength | 828 MPa / 120 ksi |
| Minimum elongation | 10 percent |
| Modulus of elasticity | About 114 GPa |
| Magnetic response | Non magnetic |
| Melting range | About 1604 to 1660 °C |
Why It Matters For This Range
- Roughly 44 percent less mass than the same fastener in steel, which is the whole reason the range exists
- Yield strength high enough to replace a medium strength steel fastener rather than an aluminium one
- A stable oxide film that re-forms in air or water, so chloride service does not pit the fastener
- Non magnetic, so the fastener can sit next to sensors and imaging equipment

Use Guide
Fitting Titanium Fasteners
Use anti seize on the threads
Titanium galls readily against titanium and against stainless. A dry film or copper free anti seize on the thread and under the head keeps the torque to tension relationship predictable and lets the joint be broken later.
Torque to a titanium figure not a steel figure
Do not carry over a torque value from a steel or stainless fastener of the same size. The friction behaviour is different and the safe clamp load has to be set for the alloy and for the lubricant actually used.
Seat the drive fully before applying load
Push the Torx key or the socket right to the bottom of the recess before turning. A partly seated drive concentrates load on the top edge of the recess.
Watch galvanic pairings
Titanium is a noble metal. Where it is bolted directly to aluminium or magnesium in a wet environment, isolate the joint or accept that the lighter metal will carry the corrosion.
Keep the bearing face clean and flat
A wide flange or saucer face only works if it lands on a flat clean surface. Swarf or paint under the head shifts the clamp load off centre.
