How To Use It
Reading A Titanium Grade
A titanium grade number and a UNS number describe the same thing from two directions. The ASTM grade number is the shorthand used on drawings and in purchase orders. The UNS number is the unique five character identifier that removes any ambiguity between standards bodies, which is why both are given here.
Commercially pure grades run from Gr.1 to Gr.4 with strength rising and formability falling as the number increases. The palladium bearing grades Gr.7 Gr.11 Gr.16 and Gr.17 pair a small palladium addition with a commercially pure base for reducing acid service. The alloys carry their alloying elements in the name, so Ti 6-4 is 6 percent aluminium and 4 percent vanadium, and Ti 6-2-4-2 is 6 aluminium 2 tin 4 zirconium 2 molybdenum.
