How To Use It

Reading A Titanium Grade

A titanium grade number and a UNS number describe the same thing from two directions. The ASTM grade number is the shorthand used on drawings and in purchase orders. The UNS number is the unique five character identifier that removes any ambiguity between standards bodies, which is why both are given here.

Commercially pure grades run from Gr.1 to Gr.4 with strength rising and formability falling as the number increases. The palladium bearing grades Gr.7 Gr.11 Gr.16 and Gr.17 pair a small palladium addition with a commercially pure base for reducing acid service. The alloys carry their alloying elements in the name, so Ti 6-4 is 6 percent aluminium and 4 percent vanadium, and Ti 6-2-4-2 is 6 aluminium 2 tin 4 zirconium 2 molybdenum.

What is the UNS number for Grade 5 titanium
UNS R56400. Grade 5 is the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, nominally 6 percent aluminium and 4 percent vanadium with the balance titanium.
What is the difference between Grade 5 and Grade 23
Grade 23 is the extra low interstitial version of the same alloy, carried under UNS R56407. It trades a little strength for better fracture toughness and ductility.
Which grades are commercially pure
Grades 1 2 3 and 4, carried under UNS R50250 R50400 R50550 and R50700. Strength rises and formability falls as the grade number increases.
Why do some grades contain palladium
Grades 7 11 16 and 17 carry a small palladium addition that improves resistance in reducing acid environments where the unalloyed metal would be attacked.
