Overview

Where It Fits

The same low saucer head profile carried up into the larger M8 and M10 diameters. The M10 sizes in this range are cut with a 1.25 mm fine pitch rather than the coarse pitch, which is the pitch commonly specified for M10 fasteners on vehicle and machine assemblies.

Problems It Solves

  • Larger diameter joints that still need a low head and a wide bearing face
  • M10 positions that call for a fine 1.25 mm pitch rather than the coarse pitch
  • Weight reduction on the larger fasteners of an assembly where the mass saving is highest
  • Bearing faces against aluminium or composite where a small hex head would dig in

Typical Application Areas

  • Motorcycle and bicycle assemblies — brake calipers
  • Motorsport and performance vehicles — suspension
  • Marine and offshore fittings — deck fittings
  • Chemical and process equipment — covers
  • Electronics and instruments — housings and mountings near sensors and imaging equipment

Why Titanium For This Joint

Weight

Titanium has a density of about 4.43 g/cm³ against about 7.85 g/cm³ for steel. Swapping a steel fastener for the same size in Ti-6Al-4V removes roughly 44 percent of the mass of that fastener.

Strength

ASTM Grade 5 is specified with a minimum tensile strength of 895 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 828 MPa, so the strength is in the range of a medium strength alloy steel rather than of aluminium.

Corrosion

Titanium carries a stable oxide film that re-forms as soon as it is damaged in air or water. It resists seawater and chloride environments that pit and crevice corrode common stainless grades.

Non magnetic

Titanium and its alloys are non magnetic, which matters around sensors, imaging equipment and magnetically sensitive instruments.

Use Guide

Fitting This Fastener

Use anti seize on the threads

Titanium galls readily against titanium and against stainless. A dry film or copper free anti seize on the thread and under the head keeps the torque to tension relationship predictable and lets the joint be broken later.

Torque to a titanium figure not a steel figure

Do not carry over a torque value from a steel or stainless fastener of the same size. The friction behaviour is different and the safe clamp load has to be set for the alloy and for the lubricant actually used.

Seat the drive fully before applying load

Push the Torx key or the socket right to the bottom of the recess before turning. A partly seated drive concentrates load on the top edge of the recess.

Watch galvanic pairings

Titanium is a noble metal. Where it is bolted directly to aluminium or magnesium in a wet environment, isolate the joint or accept that the lighter metal will carry the corrosion.

Keep the bearing face clean and flat

A wide flange or saucer face only works if it lands on a flat clean surface. Swarf or paint under the head shifts the clamp load off centre.

FAQ

Questions About This Size

What is the head size of the Gr.5 Ti6Al4V Titanium Bolt Saucer Head M8*70
The head is 16 mm in diameter and 5 mm high, with a T40 Torx recess.
What titanium grade is it
Grade 5 titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400. ASTM B348 specifies a minimum tensile strength of 895 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 828 MPa for this grade.
What tool does it take
It uses a T40 Torx recess. Seat the tool fully before applying load so the drive is not carried on the top edge of the recess.
How much lighter is it than the same size in steel
Titanium has a density of about 4.43 g/cm³ against about 7.85 g/cm³ for steel, so the same fastener in Ti-6Al-4V carries roughly 44 percent less mass.
Do I need anti seize
Yes, we recommend it. Titanium galls against titanium and against stainless. A dry film or copper free anti seize on the thread and under the head keeps the torque to tension relationship predictable and lets the joint be broken later.
Is a different length available in this thread size
Yes. M8 is stocked from 12 mm to 90 mm in this range. The full ladder is listed above.
What does it cost
$2.00 per piece as listed. Email [email protected] with the quantity for a full quotation.
