What a thyratron does in welding controls and modulators, how failures present themselves, and how to identify a replacement across three numbering systems.
A thyratron is a gas filled switching tube. It holds off voltage until the grid allows conduction, then conducts heavily with a low voltage drop until the current falls away. That behaviour is what makes it useful in resistance welding controls pulse modulators and industrial switching gear, where a large current has to be released at a precisely controlled moment.
Failures rarely announce themselves as a dead tube. The common patterns are erratic firing, firing without a trigger, refusing to fire at the normal grid drive, or a gradual change in the timing of the machine it controls. Because the symptom appears as a control fault, the tube is often the last thing suspected and the first thing that should have been checked.

Gas filled tubes need their specified cathode warm up before voltage is applied. Shortening that warm up is one of the fastest ways to destroy a new tube. Tubes that have been stored for a long period or transported cold may need extended warm up before first use, and any mercury type must be stored and operated in the orientation specified for it.
The same switching tube appears under Chinese Russian and USA designations. A tube stamped NL-5557 may sit in a manual as FG17, and the Chinese equivalent may be listed as a ZQM type. When you send an enquiry include every marking on the glass and the base rather than only the number you believe is the type.
Many switching tubes use a base plus a top cap. The cap connector has to suit the terminal and the voltage present at that point, and the base socket has to hold contact pressure through repeated thermal cycles. Quote both with the tube if the existing hardware has been in service for years.
A switching tube in a production line is a stop the line item. The cost of holding one spare is small next to a day of lost output, and holding it also means you are not searching for an obsolete designation on the day it fails.
It is one of the likely causes, along with grid circuit faults. Check the grid drive circuit first, then substitute a known good tube if one is available.
Send the marking exactly as it appears. Several of the switching types we list are quoted under Chinese Russian and USA designations.
Send the designations you have identified together with quantities. Price and availability come back by email.
