What The Two Digits Actually Mean

IP stands for International Protection Code. The rating is two numbers: the first is protection against solids and dust, the second is protection against water. A higher number is a higher level of protection, so IP65 reads as dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction.

The First Digit Dust And Solids

Level 0 is no protection. Level 1 stops large solid objects, level 2 medium sized objects and level 3 small objects. Level 4 stops objects larger than 1 mm. Level 5 prevents harmful dust accumulation and level 6 completely prevents dust from entering.

The Second Digit Water

Level 1 protects against dripping water and level 2 against flowing water with the housing tilted up to 15 degrees. Level 3 covers spray up to 60 degrees, level 4 splashing from any direction and level 5 water jets from any direction with no damage. Level 7 allows short immersion to 1 m and level 8 long immersion under pressure.

Why IP65 Is The Line For Crane Controls

A crane control lives in the same air as the machine. IP65 means the transmitter can be carried through a dusty foundry bay and the receiver can sit on an outdoor gantry through rain without a cover. IP54 is enough for a dry indoor hall and costs less.

How To Ask For It On An Enquiry

State the environment rather than only the rating: indoor and dry, outdoor and rained on, wash-down, or dusty. That tells the supplier whether IP54 or IP65 is the right call and whether a dust proof cover should be added to the order.
