The Paint Is Not the Product

Prepainted steel is sold on colour, which is why buyers spend their attention on the RAL number and very little on what sits underneath it. The paint system decides how the roof looks in year one. The metallic coating underneath decides how it looks in year fifteen.

PPGI Is Prepainted Galvanized

PPGI is prepainted steel over a hot dip galvanized zinc coating. Zinc protects the steel sacrificially, including at cut edges, which is why galvanized substrate has been the default for roofing sheet for decades. Winton lists several PPGI items, including a white coil in colour code 9016 and prepainted cold rolled GI colour coated coil.

PPGL Is Prepainted Galvalume

PPGL is prepainted steel over an aluminium zinc alloy coating, usually referred to as galvalume. The aluminium fraction gives better general corrosion resistance and better heat reflectance, while the zinc fraction still provides some cut edge protection. Winton lists PPGL alongside PPGI as a distinct product rather than a variant.

Why the Distinction Gets Blurred

Both arrive on the same coil, both take the same paint systems, and both look identical on a sample card. The difference is in the metallic coating weight and chemistry, which is documented and not visible. The only protection a buyer has is to state the substrate on the purchase order and buy from a supplier who lists the two separately, which is how they are catalogued here.

Coil or Finished Sheet

If you roll form your own profile you buy coil and the width matters.
